What is the structure of a good Task 1 Academic response?
A reliable approach for Task 1 is a four-part structure: (1) Introduction — paraphrase the question in one sentence describing what the graph shows; (2) Overview — two sentences describing the most important trends without specific data; (3) Detail paragraph 1 — support the overview with specific figures; (4) Detail paragraph 2 — describe the second main trend with more figures. Never just list numbers — select and organise information meaningfully.
What is the 'overview' and why is it important?
The overview is 1-2 sentences that state the most significant trend or feature of the graph, without giving specific numbers. It answers: 'What is the most important thing this graph shows?' A clear overview is essential and is most commonly placed after the introduction; coherent placement elsewhere is possible, but omitting the overview entirely will significantly limit your Task Achievement score.
Can I give my opinion or explain the reasons for trends in Academic Task 1?
No — you must not express personal opinions or explain why the data changed in Academic Task 1. Your only job is to describe and compare the information shown. Writing 'This happened because of economic growth' is off-task — the graph cannot prove causation. Save opinion and explanation for Task 2. In General Training Task 1 (letter writing), opinions and feelings are appropriate.
