الأسئلة الشائعة

What is the difference between 'however' and 'although'?
'However' signals contrast and can appear in several positions. At the start of a sentence it is followed by a comma: 'The exam was hard. However, she passed.' In the middle or at the end of a clause it is enclosed by commas: 'She passed, however, despite the difficulty.' After a semicolon it connects two independent clauses directly: 'The exam was hard; however, she passed.' 'Although', by contrast, connects two ideas within one sentence: 'Although the exam was hard, she passed.' — never use 'although' after a full stop to start a new sentence.
Which linking words show cause and which show result?
Cause words (show why something happened): because, since, as, due to, as a result of. Result words (show what happened because of it): therefore, thus, consequently, as a result, for this reason. Example: 'Prices rose significantly. As a result, demand fell sharply.' Using both types correctly and varying them contributes to the Coherence and Cohesion score in IELTS Writing.
How many linking words should I use in IELTS writing?
Quality matters more than quantity. IELTS examiners penalise overuse of mechanical linking words — starting every sentence with 'Moreover' or 'Furthermore' is a sign of poor cohesion. Use linking words to make logical connections between ideas clear, not to decorate sentences. Aim for natural variety: some connectors, some relative clauses, some reference words (it, this, they).
