الأسئلة الشائعة

What is the main difference between the present perfect and the past simple?
The past simple describes a completed action at a specific finished time: 'I visited Paris last year'. The present perfect connects the past to the present — the exact time is unknown, unimportant, or the period is not yet finished: 'I have visited Paris' (life experience); 'I have lived here for five years' (still living there now). Key rule: if a specific finished time is given (yesterday, last year, in 2010), use past simple.
Which time expressions are used with the present perfect?
Use these with present perfect: ever, never, already, yet, just, recently, since, for, so far, up to now, lately. Use these with past simple instead: yesterday, last week, last year, in + year, ago, at + specific time. Quick test: if you can add 'yesterday' or a specific year, use past simple. If the time is open or unspecified, use present perfect.
What is the difference between 'since' and 'for' with the present perfect?
'Since' marks the starting point of a period: 'I have lived here since 2019' (started in 2019, still ongoing). 'For' measures the length of the period: 'I have lived here for five years'. Simple test: 'since' is followed by a date or moment; 'for' is followed by a period of time. Both describe situations that started in the past and continue to the present.
