نستخدم الماضي البسيط (Past Simple) للحديث عن حدث بدأ وانتهى في الماضي. الأفعال المنتظمة تأخذ ed ، أما الأفعال الشاذة فلها صيغ خاصة يجب حفظها. وفي النفي والسؤال نستخدم did ويعود الفعل لأصله.

How do I form the past simple of regular verbs?
Add -ed to the base form: walk → walked, help → helped. For verbs ending in -e, add -d only: live → lived, like → liked. For verbs ending in consonant + y, change y to i and add -ed: carry → carried, study → studied. For one-syllable verbs (or two-syllable verbs with stress on the final syllable) ending in one vowel + one consonant, double the final consonant: stop → stopped, plan → planned, prefer → preferred. Do not double when the verb ends in two vowels, two consonants, or the stress falls on the first syllable: listen → listened, need → needed.
Why do some verbs not use -ed in the past simple?
Irregular verbs have a unique past form that must be memorised — there is no rule. Common examples: go → went, have → had, see → saw, buy → bought, come → came, take → took, make → made, speak → spoke. Learning these in context (full sentences) is the most reliable method.
How do I form a question and a negative in the past simple?
Questions: Did + subject + base verb: 'Did you see the film?' The main verb always returns to its base form after 'did'. Never say 'Did you saw?'. Negatives: subject + didn't + base verb: 'I didn't go to school'. Both 'did' and 'didn't' are used with ALL subjects (I, you, he, she, we, they) — no conjugation of the main verb is needed.
