What Makes a Question Rhetorical? A rhetorical question is a question asked not to get an answer, but to make a point. The writer already knows the answer — or assumes the reader does. The real purpose is to create emphasis, provoke thought, or guide the reader toward a conclusion without stating it bluntly.
