الأسئلة الشائعة

Can I use 'will' in the if-clause of a first conditional?
In standard first conditionals, the if-clause uses the present simple — never will: 'If it rains, we will stay home'. The one exception is when 'will' expresses willingness rather than future time: 'If you will help me, I will help you' means 'If you are willing to help me…'. Confusing these is a common mistake even at advanced levels.
Can I replace 'will' in the result clause with another modal verb?
Yes. The result clause can use can, may, might, should, or could: 'If you study, you can pass' (ability); 'If it rains, we might cancel' (possibility); 'If you feel ill, you should rest' (advice). Choosing the right modal changes the certainty or type of the result being described.
What is the key difference between the first and second conditional?
The distinction is one of speaker stance: the first conditional presents the situation as a real future possibility ('If I find my keys, I will leave'); the second conditional presents it as hypothetical, remote, or unlikely ('If I found a million dollars, I would travel the world'). It is the speaker's perspective — not an objective calculation of probability — that determines which form to use.
