What is elision in English and why does it matter for listening?
Elision is when native speakers drop or reduce sounds in fast, connected speech. It matters because it makes real spoken English sound very different from how words are written or pronounced slowly.
Why is understanding native speaker speed so difficult even at C1 level?
Most classroom input uses clear, slow speech. At C1, you may know all the vocabulary but still miss it when sounds are reduced or swallowed — your ear simply has not been trained for that speed.
What is the shadowing technique and how do I use it?
Shadowing means listening to a short audio clip and repeating it aloud immediately, copying the rhythm and reductions. Start with 10-second clips and gradually increase the length as your ear improves.
Should I read the transcript before or after listening?
Listen at least once without the transcript so you train your ear to work independently. Use the transcript afterwards to identify exactly which sounds you missed.
